'Shield1.jpg' is an original photo of a Caning Shield made from 1.5 millimetre thick cotton-insert Neoprene rubber (cotton cloth sandwiched between two layers of Neoprene rubber). The cotton insert gives the shield more dimensional stability, and reduces the distortion under tension.
The Shield is intended to protect the wearer from Cane-strokes that are too high or too low, and from strokes which would wrap-around. The row of brass eye-lets down each side provide attachment points for elastic fasteners, at the front of the wearers body. The 'sticky' nature of the Neoprene rubber prevents the Shield from slipping, when in contact with the skin. The Shield can be worn by either a male or a female Canee. This particular Shield was custom-made to suit the wearer. The dimensions of the outer rectangle (the original sheet of material) are: Imperial: 32 inch x 12 inch Metric: 813 millimetre x 305 millimetre The dimensions of the rectangular inner slot are: Imperial: 14 inch x 4 inch Metric: 356 millimetre x 102 millimetre Note the white alignment mark, at the top of the Shield. This is aligned with the wearers buttock-cleft. Eric Carwardine Perth, Western Australia 16th March, 2001 |
